There was little goal mouth incident from either side in a dull first period until midfielder Paul Sheerin (pictured) scored his first from the spot six minutes before half-time.
It was Sheerin's first goal for the club as he converted after being body checked in the box by David McCracken.
Sheerin then netted his second on 70 minutes and Philip McGuire completed the rout on 73.
The win moves Aberdeen up to ninth place after manager Steve Paterson made no fewer than five changes to the side that lost to Partick Thistle last Saturday.
New Dundee United boss Ian McCall knows he must improve results at the club quickly, as they remain bottom of the Scottish Premier League level on points with Motherwell.
