Kilmarnock moved into fourth place, while Livingston lost again at Aberdeen.
Hibernian were denied a valuable win against Motherwell by an injury time leveller from Stephen Craigan.
Hibs had been hoping to keep the pressure on the top three and looked on course to come away with the points when Chris Killen (48) and Stephen Glass (78) struck to overturn Phil O'Donnell's earlier goal (40), before Craigan popped up deep into injury time.
Kilmarnock now move above Hibs in the table after earning a 2-1 win over struggling Falkirk at Rugby Park.
Danny Invincible (3) had given Killie an early lead, but Daniel McBreen (19) responded quickly for the visitors. In a tense second half, Steven Naismith's finish (78) proved the difference between the two sides.
In a reduced SPL programme, bottom club Livingston were soundly beaten 3-0 by Aberdeen in the only other game of the day.
Russell Anderson (17), Steve Lovell (63) and Ferne Snoyl (81) all got on the scoresheet for The Dons to ease their own worries.
