The defender has signed for the Dons from Dundee United and is hoping to replace Russell Anderson in Jimmy Calderwood's side.
Mair could even succeed Anderson, who has joined Sunderland, as captain, and he is happy to be working with Calderwood.
"This is a new chapter in my career and it was great that Jimmy Calderwood remembered me playing at left-back for Dundee," said Mair in the Daily Record.
"A few other clubs were interested, but Aberdeen was the only one I wanted to join.
"I came straight up to talk to Jimmy and everything was done within an hour."
Aberdeen boss Calderwood confirmed the 26-year-old is in contention to step in to Anderson's job as skipper.
Calderwood said: "We needed cover in several positions, he was available for free, he's an Aberdeen fan and when that chance comes along you take it.
"He is certainly one of the candidates to replace Russell."
