Jamie Langfield has left Aberdeen by mutual consent less than three weeks after making his final appearance for the club in his own testimonial.
The 35-year-old has found himself pushed down the pecking order after Danny Ward’s arrival at Pittodrie on a season-long loan from Liverpool.
Scott Brown also played 10 more games than Langfield last term after moving to Scotland from Cheltenham and he is now manager Derek McInnes’ second choice behind Ward.
Former Dundee keeper Langfield was under contract until the end of the season after moving there from Dunfermline in 2005.
Knowing his first-team opportunities would be limited, however, he has been granted the chance to pursue a deal elsewhere.
Langfield made 335 competitive appearances for Aberdeen and celebrated a decade of service to the Scottish Premiership side with a benefit game against Brighton on July 26.
He suffered a brain seizure in May 2011 and was out of football for nine months but is now looking to keep furthering his career.
Langfield told Aberdeen’s official website: “I have loved my time at the club and have spent the best period of my career here.
“However, I still have much that I want to achieve and am looking for an opportunity to continue to play regular first team football.
“I also want to look at the option of combining playing with coaching going forward as I see this as a long term option for me.”
Aberdeen manager McInnes added: “Jamie has been brilliant to work with and his desire to keep playing first team football is admirable and understandable.
“On behalf of everyone at the club I would like to thank Jamie for his tremendous service over the years and wish him all the very best for the future wherever that takes him.”
