Zaliukas seals Hearts loan move

Hearts have completed the loan capture of FBK Kaunas midfielder Marius Zaliukas.

Hearts have completed the loan capture of midfielder Marius Zaliukas from FBK Kaunas.

The 22-year-old trained with Valdas Ivanauskas' squad earlier in the summer and was also involved in the club's pre-season friendly against Osasuna.

Zaliukas, capped twice by Lithuania, can play either as a defender or in midfield and Ivanauskas (pictured) believes his versatility will come in useful as the campaign goes on.

"Zaliukas has signed on loan and he gives us options because he can play defensive midfield and also centre back," the Jambos coach told the Edinburgh Evening News.

"It's important that our players can play different positions in the team."

Ivanauskas remains hopeful that Zaliukas will not be the last new face at Tynecastle this month and is confident of wrapping up deals for two other players in the near future.

The Lithuanian tactician refused to be drawn on the identities of either player but has confirmed talks are well underway with their respective clubs.

"We have the chance to sign two more players so it's certainly possible that others could arrive," he added.

"We are waiting to hear whether these transfers can go ahead as they are not 100 percent yet.

"The end of the month is just over two weeks away but these two players are options for us.

"We are talking right now with their clubs and maybe it will take more time, but they know we are interested."

Benfica defender Tiago Gomes is one player reported to be nearing a switch to Hearts as Ivanauskas' movement in the window continues to gather pace.

Meanwhile, midfielder Paul Hartley's fitness will be assessed during a behind-closed-doors friendly against Gretna on Tuesday.

Hartley has been sidelined with a groin problem and will take the field alongside new signings Zaliukas and Mauricio Pinilla.
