Kyle Lafferty continued his bright start to life at Tynecastle with a well-taken double against East Fife in the Betfred Cup.

Lafferty scored goals either side of a Christophe Berra header to secure a comfortable 3-0 win against their League One opponents, who were reduced to 10 men late on when Ben Gordon was shown two quickfire yellow cards.

Hearts move up to second in Group B but remain two points behind leaders Dunfermline, who recorded an emphatic 5-1 victory over Peterhead.

Louis Moult hit his second spectacular free-kick of the season as Group F leaders Motherwell claimed an impressive 4-0 win over Morton.

Charles Dunne headed home inside three minutes of his debut and Chris Cadden's goal put Motherwell in cruise control before Gary Harkins was sent off in the 39th minute.

Richard Tait added a third and Moult struck moments after coming off the bench as Motherwell made it nine goals in two Group F matches, passing and moving around the Fir Park pitch in some style.

Meanwhile, Queen's Park recorded their first win of the competition with a 3-0 drubbing of Edinburgh City in the group's other game.

Inverness suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Championship rivals Falkirk as first-half goals from Joe McKee and Nathan Austin secured the Bairns their second consecutive win the Cup.

Meanwhile, Stirling beat bottom club Forfar Athletic 3-1 away from home to remain in contention in Group A.

Dundee kept themselves level on points with rivals Dundee United at the top of Group C after recording a 2-0 win over minnows Buckie Thistle.

Denholm netted twice in the space of five minutes, while David Gold and Steven Doris also got on the scoresheet, in a 4-0 win for the home side.

Hamilton edged out Queen of the South on penalties in the most exciting match of the round after their Group G clash ended 1-1 at the end of regulation time.

Stephen Dobbie sent the match to penalties with a late equaliser - cancelling out Steven Boyd's opener, but Darren Brownlie missed a crucial penalty to hand the hosts victory and top spot in the group.

Albion Rovers got themselves back on track with a 5-2 win over East Kilbride, who remain bottom of Group G.
