The SFA and Chris Mitchell foundation have launched a scholarship to help Scottish footballers transition to life after the game

PFA Scotland and the Chris Mitchell Foundation have launched a scholarship programme to help footballers adjust to a new career after retirement.

Chris Mitchell was a professional footballer who took his own life at the age of 27 after developing mental health issues, suffering from depression and anxiety.

In honour of Mitchell, the Foundation was established to raise awareness around mental health and well being for players, ex-players and staff working in the Scottish professional football industry.

Scotland PFA chairman John Rankin said: "In Scotland it's not a wealthy football environment anymore, it really isn't. If you're going to have a part-time job to run alongside it then these courses would help players with that.

"A lot of players I know have actually got two jobs now, they play football during the day and do something else at night. So if we can encourage people to look after themselves out of football and have another career to fall back on when it does come to an end then great.

"But these players are fully focused on what they are doing on a Saturday for their clubs but it's just having that bit of education behind them, which is great because you need that nowadays."
