Rainer Bonhof has explained why Derek Riordan was not in Scotland's U21 squad.Scotland Under-21 coach Rainer Bonhof has explained why Derek Riordan was excluded from the squad that drew 2-2 with Italy.
Riordan, who has starred for Hibernian this season, was on the verge of a call-up to Walter Smith's senior squad, but in the end was not even included in Bonhof's selection.
The German tactician believes that Riordan's attitude was not right, and was less than impressed with his performance for his first cap against Austria last month.
"It's about making him understand he should keep sharp every day in training," said Bonhof.
"He needs to perform in training as well as in matches. He has to do his very best and be prepared to work on his weaknesses and strengths.
"Maybe leaving him out will work, I don't know, maybe he will blame me for saying this, but I believe he should wake up and say, 'I will show everyone I'm the man'."
Riordan rejected the chance to move to Cardiff City just before the deadline, and this also made Bonhof think twice about his selection.
"It disturbs your mind a bit when you think, 'Should I stay?' or 'Is this the right time to move?'," added Bonhof.
"I have a good squad, Derek wasn't in shape, and then came the hassle with Cardiff. He was confused and I thought it was better to leave him at home and let him clear his mind.
"If he performs well he could be involved either with myself or maybe with Walter in October, but he needs to concentrate on his job.
"If he is in next time, we'll sit together and have a chat."
