Kris Commons’ late winner helped Hibernian secure a vital 2-1 victory over Falkirk that lifts Neil Lennon’s side back to the top of the Scottish Championship.

The game at the Falkirk Stadium looked to be heading for a draw until Commons stepped up three minutes from time to curl a beautiful free kick into the roof of the net with his left foot.

With overnight leaders Dundee United losing 1-0 away to Dumbarton, the three points means Hibs sit top the table heading into 2017.

The visitors had to come from behind in the first half with Craig Sibbald opening the scoring for Falkirk after Hibs goalkeeper Ross Laidlaw could only parry John Baird's shot into his path.

The lead was short lived as Jason Cummings slotted Commons' cross into the net one minute later to level the match.

Dundee United fall to second in the table, one behind Hibs, after Mark Docherty's 27th-minute goal consigned them to defeat against Dumbarton in blustery conditions.

There was a slice of fortune attached to the goal as Docherty whipped in a cross which evaded everyone and the ball crept past goalkeeper Cammy Bell with the aid of a strong wind.

The win lifts Dumbarton to seventh in the table, level on points with Queen of the South, who drew 0-0 with Ayr in a meeting of two out-of-form teams in Dumfries.

Queen of the South are now 13 games since their last league victory, while Ayr have not won in nine Championship games.

In a game of few chances, Ayr hit the crossbar through Daryll Meggatt after 20 minutes while Darren Brownlie sent a header over the bar as Queens pushed for a winning goal late on before the sides had to settle for a draw.
