Wilson, who played 117 times for the club between 2000-2006 before moving to Celtic, rejoined United last summer on an initial six-month contract.
His all-round fitness and performances on the park persuaded manager Jackie McNamara to extend his stay on Tayside until the end of the 2014-15 season.
"I said back in August that the short-term deal would give both Mark and the club a chance to see if things could work out to the satisfaction of both and this has proved to be the case," McNamara told the club's official website.
"He adds great experience both on the park and in the dressing room and also enhances our options in selection.
"To have someone of Mark's experience here until the end of next season will help nurture the youngsters who play alongside him and I am delighted he has signed this extension."
Wilson, who was capped once for Scotland during his time at Celtic, said: "I have enjoyed my football again since coming back to Tannadice and signing this longer deal means I can feel settled knowing I am here until the end of next season at least.
"It is brilliant coming into training each day and working with the fantastic young players but it is also great working with a coaching staff who make you feel valued and very much part of things.
"United have given me the opportunity to show I can still play at this level and I intend to do that for the benefit of the club."
