And the former England and Rangers defender, whose Caley side beat Hibs 2-0 last Saturday in his final game in charge, will be joined by Maurice Malpas, his assistant at the Caledonian Stadium since January 2009.
In a statement on their website Hibernian said: "We can confirm that compensation has been agreed with Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC.
"This means Terry Butcher and his assistant manager Maurice Malpas now have permission to speak to Hibernian to agree personal terms."
Hibs chairman Rod Petrie, who has been instrumental in persuading Butcher to take on the challenge at Easter Road, said: "We are grateful to Inverness Caledonian Thistle for the professional and courteous way in which the discussion have been conducted.
"We now look forward to welcoming the new management team to Easter Road Stadium."
Hibernian also confirmed that contractual arrangements are being carried out with the individuals with a view to introducing them at a media briefing on Tuesday afternoon.
The news was a blow to Inverness chairman Kenny Cameron who said: "It is a major disappointment to the club and its supporters that they have taken this decision.
"I'd like to put on record our appreciation of the excellent job they have done at Inverness since Caley Thistle provided them with the opportunity to join the club in January 2009.
"Maurice was offered the manager's role but declined. We would, however, like to record our sincere appreciation to him for taking the team on Saturday in what was a resounding victory."
Butcher, who takes over from Pat Fenlon after the Irishman left the club on November 1, has previously had spells in charge of Motherwell, Coventry and Sunderland, and has led Inverness to second place in the Scottish Premiership and a second successive League Cup semi-final this season.
You can watch Terry Butcher in his first match in charge of Hibs against St Mirren live on Sky Sports 3 from 12.45pm on Saturday, November 23
