Marseille manager Didier Deschamps has confirmed he is in talks with Bordeaux star Alou Diarra over a possible move to the club.
Deschamps has reportedly courted the services of the Bordeaux captain since the end of last season, having informed the Marseille board of his desire to sign the player.
Diarra is contracted to Les Girondins until 2011 and any move would have to incur a 7.7million-euro (£6.5m) release clause in the player's contract.
The defensive midfielder has caught the eye of Deschamps, who feels he will improve his Ligue 1 winning side ahead of the new campaign.
His quest for the 28-year-old may be aided by cordial relations with agent Jean-Pierre Bernes, who also represents Deschamps.
But any deal requires financial backing from the Stade Velodrome directors and Deschamps will look to persuade the money men to back his bid.
He said: "(Diarra) is a player who obviously interests me. I prefer quality to quantity.
"Having made a sporting decision, there are discussions on an economic level, which concern my directors."
Deschamps has also moved to quash rumours linking Taye Taiwo and Andre Ayew with moves away from the club.
Taiwo has largely been used as a back-up to first-choice left-back Gabriel Heinze and is apparently wanted by Premier League outfit Tottenham, even though he still has a year left to run on his existing deal.
"He's under contract," said Deschamps of Taiwo. "He's here and he's staying here.
"We'd like him to extend his contract. I need him for sporting reasons, I count on him."
Ayew - who impressed for Ghana at the World Cup finals in South Africa - is reportedly being primed for a move to Serie A.
But Deschamps reiterated his faith in the young winger, who spent last season on-loan at Arles-Avignon.
"I've told him that I count on him," added the French boss.
"And I made my position clear in April, before the World Cup, in front of the directors.
"I spoke to his father (former Marseille favourite Abedi Pele) about it on Tuesday."
