Sunderland appeal successful over weekend dismissal

Sunderland defender John Mensah has had the red card he received in the 2-0 defeat by Liverpool rescinded on appeal. The Ghana international was facing a one-match suspension after being shown a straight red card by referee Kevin Friend after tangling with Luis Suarez in the 82nd minute. Black Cats boss Steve Bruce was unhappy with a number of decisions from Friend and his assistants during Sunday's Premier League clash and the club launched an immediate appeal. The Wearside outfit have confirmed that an FA disciplinary meeting upheld their appeal and that Mensah is now free to face Manchester City on 3rd April. Bruce told the club's official website: "We thank the Football Association for considering our appeal and naturally we're delighted he'll be available for the game against Manchester City." Mensah's availability will come as a welcome boost to Bruce with Sunderland currently sliding down the Premier League table having taken just one point from their last six outings.
