Schalke have given up their pursuit of Stade Brest striker Nolan Roux after they failed to meet the French club's £7.2million valuation.
The Bundesliga outfit saw their latest offer for the forward, who scored six goals in 29 appearances for Brest last term, knocked back.
Roux still has two years to run on his current deal with the Ligue 1 club, who are keen to retain his services ahead of the new campaign.
And Schalke general manager Horst Heldt told the
Rheinische Post: "With regard to Nolan Roux, Stade Brest have refused our latest offer. It is now very unlikely we will be signing the player."
Japan
However, Brazilian Edu could be on his way out of Schalke after it emerged he is being targeted by clubs in Japan.
"We have been handed information from Edu's agent about lucrative offers from Japan for his client," Heldt added.
Meanwhile, Heldt has warned midfielder Alexander Baumjohann he faces being booted out of the club if he does not train harder.
The 24-year-old was not a regular last season and his work ethic has come in for scrutiny.
Commitment
"If it was just down to his talent, he would be in a different league," Heldt told
kicker-Sportmagazin.
"He has true talent and is able to beat every opponent, generally. However, he needs to take advantage of the opportunities that are being given to him.
"He should know that this is really his final chance at this club, probably in his whole career. He needs to get it right now because he is running out of time.
"It would hurt to let him go knowing what sort of a great talent he is."
