Cameroon international to remain in France

Auxerre have swooped to snap up Cameroon international Georges Mandjeck from Ligue 1 rivals Rennes. The versatile 23-year-old has penned a four-and-a-half-year contract with his new employers. Mandjeck, who can operate at the back or in midfield, has opted to move on after featuring only sparingly for Rennes this season. It appeared at one stage on deadline day that he was destined to re-join former employers Kaiserslautern, but Auxerre ultimately came out on top in the race for his signature. "George was the first choice of the coach," president Gerard Bourgoin told the club's official website.

Discussions

"The day after the game against Dijon, Laurent Fournier said he want him. "Discussions were ongoing with his agent, but I had to leave at one stage. "When I contacted the director general of Rennes, negotiations had been stopped because an understanding had been reached with Kaiserslautern, a club where George has played before. "Everything was apparently in place, including all financial matters, so we stopped all contact. "We discussed a number of other options, maybe 30 players, but in football there are always these last-minute reversals."
