Police probe Nazi salute by Lyon fan at Man City's Etihad Stadium

Olympique Lyonnais

Greater Manchester Police are investigating footage of a Lyon fan making a Nazi salute in the stands at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

Officers are aware of the video, which has been circulating on social media, and the force confirmed on Thursday that it is being treated as a hate crime, with enquiries ongoing.

Olympique Lyonnais have also said they are attempting to identify the individual involved and, should they be successful, will issue him with a lifetime ban from all their matches.

"As soon as he is identified, he will be excluded for life at Groupama Stadium and travel for club matches," they said on Thursday.

Greater Manchester Police chief inspector Gareth Parkin, who was silver commander for the Manchester City-Lyon fixture, said: "This is absolutely abhorrent behaviour and it has no place in our community, and no place in sport.

"We are committed to policing racism at football matches, and hate crimes of any sort will simply not be tolerated. We will be working closely with French police and both clubs to identify the person responsible."
