Auxerre remain in the hunt with a 2-0 win at Guingamp and, despite being in fifth place, they stand just three points behind Nice with two games in hand.
Cedric Barbosa gave Montpellier the lead at Stade de la Mosson after just three minutes, only for Abdelmalek Cherrad to draw the sides level with 20 minutes played.
Barbosa struck again just two minutes later only for Kaba Diawara (pictured) to rescue a point for Gernot Rohr's men after 65 minutes, giving them the point that brings them level with Marseille, but top on goal difference.
Montpellier will be happy with a point against the leaders, as it also lifts them off the foot of the table, dropping Troyes down into the basement slot.
Lyon travelled to Corsica to face Bastia sitting in second spot and with the chance to go top, but saw their title challenge suffer a blow as the hosts ran out 2-0 winners.
Mickael Essien gave Bastia the lead after 65 minutes and veteran striker Florian Maurice sealed an impressive win ten minutes from time.
Coverted striker Djibril Cisse was once more the hero for Auxerre ad his double strike gave Guy Roux's men a 2-0 win at Guingamp.
Cisse struck in the seventh and 90th minute to send Auxerre into fifth, just three points behind the leaders with two crucial games in hand.
Paris Saint Germain are hanging on in the championship race as their 1-0 win over Le Havre sees them in eighth spot, but just six points off the top in an incredibly tight championship this season.
Jose Aloisio's 35th minute goal was enough for Luis Fernandez's men to see-off promoted Le Havre at Parc des Princes.
Ajaccio took the lead at fellow struggles Sedan thanks to a goal from Yohan Demont just before the half hour, but Henri Camara drew the side level three minutes before the interval as the point were shared.
Sochaux and Monaco were both unable to register a goal in their game, as their tussle ended in a goalless draw.
