Guy Roux`s charges slipped out of the Uefa Cup at Liverpool on Thursday, and their Championnat title hopes were effectively ended on Sunday.
Auxerre went into the game knowing they could close to within three points of the leaders if they won their games in hand, but it was not to be as Lyon proved too strong.
Sidney Govou set the champions on their way with a strike on six minutes and Pegguy Luyindula sealed the win with the second shortly before half-time.
Auxerre battled bravely after the break and Djibril Cisse provided a few nervous moments with an injury-time goal for Auxerre, but the home side ran out of time to find an equaliser.
Lyon are now just four points off the pace and will fancy their chances of defending their title.
