Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas (pictured) is scheduled to meet his Lille counterpart Michel Seydoux this week to discuss a deal for Abidal.
The 24-year-old is highly rated in France but is valued in the é¼10 million region by Lille.
That figure is likely to prove to be beyond Paris Saint Germain's reach, with the capital club having been firm admirers of Abidal.
The path is now clear for reigning champions Lyon to snap up the defender, with Abidal enthusing at the prospect of a switch to Stade Gerland.
"I can hardly refuse a proposition from the club that is number one in France at the moment," said Abidal.
"Today, I have two offers, the one from Lyon and the one from PSG. My preference goes to Lyon even if I don't completely close the door on Paris."
Abidal's likely move to Lyon is a further blow to PSG, who have already missed out on Benoit Pedretti, with the France international to join Marseille from Sochaux.
PSG also have doubts over the futures of defensive trio Juan Pablo Sorin, Gabriel Heinze and Frederic Dehu as they could all leave Parc des Princes this summer.
That could prompt Vahid Halilhodzic to make a move for Arsenal defender Efstathios Tavlaridis, who has spent the past few months on loan at Lille.
Tavlaridis is tipped to leave Highbury in the summer with Lille keen to complete a permanent deal for the Greek stopper but PSG coach Halilhodzic may beat his former club to the punch.
