Prolific striker Frau had already concurred on terms with the French champions and was waiting for the two clubs to reach an accord.
Sochaux chairman Jean-Claude Plessis has confirmed a deal has been struck with Lyon and lamented the departure of Frau and Benoit Pedretti, who is joining Marseille.
"We have found an agreement with Lyon," admitted Plessis. "Everything went off smoothly. We decided not to announce the transfer fee.
"Now I am a little orphan as, on Friday night, I also found an agreement with Marseille for Pedretti. I am losing two good players."
Frau, who was also wanted by Marseille, feels linking up with Lyon will boost his prospects of forcing his way into the France squad.
"Why Lyon?" commented Frau. "You just have to look at their results over the last few years.
"Lyon have been the best club in the last three years, with the best attack. I will also play in the Champions League.
"It will perhaps be easier to impress the French team selector. I will reach a new level. I have always dreamt of playing in a great club."
Lyon are set to follow up Frau's signing with that of Abidal, who has snubbed the overtures of Paris Saint Germain to accept a switch to Stade Gerland.
All that remains is for Lyon and Lille to agree on a transfer fee for the coveted stopper, with reports suggesting talks are close to a conclusion.
But one player set to leave Lyon is Eric Carriere, who has already purportedly accepted a three-year contract to join Lens.
Lyon are prepared to sanction the schemer's departure but, as Carriere is contracted to the club until 2005, they do not want to allow him to leave for nothing.
