Fallen giants Nantes secured their Ligue 1 status on a thrilling last day in France.Fallen giants Nantes secured their Ligue 1 status on a thrilling last day in France.
Nantes, eight time champions of Le Championnat, avoided their first ever relegation from the top-flight thanks to a 1-0 win over Metz at La Beaujoire-Louis-Fonteneau.
Mamadou Diallo (pictured) grabbed the only goal of the game just before half time, although Les Canaris were still reliant on results elsewhere - which fortunately for them went their way.
The unfortunate teams joining Istres in Ligue 2 are Bastia and Caen.
The Corsicans finish second bottom, but they looked set for safety until five minutes from time at Strasbourg.
However, Mamadou Niang (85) and Alexander Farnerud (89) struck to send Bastia down.
Caen were relegated after losing 3-2 at Istres.
Rafik Saifi gave Istres and early lead before Sebastien Mazure levelled but that lasted just minutes as Frank Chaussidiere pounced.
Azzedine Ourahou put Istres 3-1 ahead and Anthony Deroin's (74) effort proved mere consolation.
Ajaccio could have gone at the start of the day but they made sure of their own fate with a 3-1 win over Sochaux.
Mohammed Kader put Sochaux ahead after just six minutes, but Ajaccio hit back soon after through Lucas Pereira.
Ajaccio made sure of victory thanks to second half goals from Abdelnasser Ouadah (60) and Laurent Merlin (89) - although they did finish the game with just ten men after Martial Robin was dismissed on the hour.
Bordeaux's safety was also guaranteed by their 3-3 draw with Marseille at Stade Chaban-Dalmas.
Lilian Laslandes pounced for Girondins (17), but Peguy Luyindula soon restored parity (22).
l'OM, hunting the last Uefa Cup spot, were then ahead through Fabrice Fiorese (27), but the home side looked to have secured victory as Camel Meriem (64 pen) and Juan Francia (86) pounced.
Luyindala again levelled with a last minute spot-lick for the visitors, but the point was not enough for Marseille to go ahead of Rennes who claimed fourth spot despite going down 1-0 at Paris Saint Germain thanks to a Pauleta strike.
Also at the top, Lille secured second spot with a 3-1 win at Auxerre.
Peter Odemwingie struck after 27 minutes for the visitors, but just moments later Bonaventure Kalou fired home.
The second half saw Lille take control and they secured victory thanks to goals from Mathieu Bodmer and Matt Moussilou.
Monaco's chances of second spot had already ended at The Stade Louis II after a 1-1 draw with St Etienne.
Javier Ernesto Chevanton had given them the best possible start with a goal within 60 seconds of the start but Julien Sable levelled 10 minutes later.
The draw also cost St Etienne as victory would have taken them into fourth place and the Uefa Cup.
Lens claimed seventh spot after a 1-0 triumph over Toulouse, with Daniel Cousin scoring the only goal of the game after 33 minutes.
Finally, champions Lyon signed off at the Stade Gerland with a 0-0 draw at home to Nice.
