John Carew hit a hat-trick as Lyon thrashed Auxerre 4-1 in the Champions Trophy.Lyon left Michael Essien on the bench as summer signing John Carew plundered a hat-trick in a 4-1 thrashing of Auxerre in the Champions Trophy.
The match pits last season's champions against the French cup winners and it was Ligue 1 title holders Lyon who held sway at Stade Abbe Deschamps.
With Essien's future at Lyon still uncertain, coach Gerard Houllier opted to leave the Chelsea target out of his plans for the game.
Houllier's decision paid off handsomely, as Lyon took the lead after just two minutes when Hatem Ben Arfa scored a penalty after Carew was fouled.
Auxerre were quickly back on level terms when Johann Radet supplied Lionel Mathis with the chance to score on seven minutes.
From there it was the Carew show, as the Norway international marked his competitive bow for Lyon with a hat-trick.
Carew's first goal arrived on 33 minutes when he finished smartly following good work from Sidney Govou.
Midway through the second half, Carew beat two defenders to the ball before letting fly with an unstoppable shot.
His hat-trick was completed on 72 minutes via a powerful header and his reward was to be immediately substitute by Houllier after Carew made the dream start to his Lyon career.
