Lyon are suing Fifa for the injury Eric Abidal picked up on international duty.Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has announced that legal action will be taken over the injury picked up by Eric Abidal on international duty.
Club officials are furious that Fifa force clubs to release players for friendly fixtures without compensation, and that they are now without their key defender for three months after he fractured his foot in France's game against Costa Rica last month.
"This season we have 24 international players at Lyon," explained Aulas.
"They all have to be at their national team's disposal during the dates set by Fifa, meaning we are without our players for a thousand working days a year.
"We always want to help national teams, but we feel these regulations are completely illicit. As we can't talk to Fifa about it, we have to go to the courts."
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has reacted with surprise to Lyon's decision, especially as the Costa Rica game was not set as an international date.
"That makes it all the more surprising. This case shows a lack of respect towards Fifa," he said.
