Muller nears Lyon return

Lyon are keen on bringing former player Patrick Muller back to the club.

Lyon are keen on bringing former player and Swiss international Patrick Muller back to the club.

The Ligue 1 leaders are looking to bring in defensive cover following a string of injuries.

The 29-year-old left the club in 2004 to join Spanish side Mallorca, but became unsettled on the Spanish island and swiftly moved back to his homeland with Basel.

Muller now seems to be set for a return to the Stade Gerland, with his agent Giuseppe Pozzo stating: "We have been negotiating with Lyon for two days, but I can't say any more for the moment.

"Patrick would be very interested, if it's about a transfer, not a loan deal.

"We may take a decision before the end of the week."

Lyon are believed to be trying to negotiate a six-month loan deal for the player, though Basel are only willing to discuss a permanent transfer.

Les Gones chairman Jean-Michel Aulas is confident the deal will be concluded by the weekend.

"We hope Patrick will come back, we would like him to be able to participate in training on Thursday and to be available to play at Monaco on Sunday," Aulas said.

Muller won Ligue 1 three times with Lyon before his departure in 2004.
