Lille secured UEFA Champions League football ahead of Lens and Marseille.
Lille secured the third UEFA Champions League spot on the last day of the season in Ligue 1, with Lens qualifying for the Uefa Cup and Marseille settling for the InterToto, whilst Champions Lyon signed off in truly spectacular fashion.Starting the day two points ahead of Marseille, a 2-2 draw away to Rennes was enough for Lille to ensure UEFA Champions League qualification for another year - although they had to come from behind.
Rennes, who started the day in European contention before slipping to seventh, edged in to a two goal lead thanks to a brace from striker Alexander Frei (36 & 65).
In the end the visitors did not need a point due to other results, but Nicholas Fauvergue (78) and Mathieu Bodmer (85) secured them a draw.
Marseille could have taken third, but were left contemplating life in the InterToto Cup as a 1-1 draw at second placed Bordeaux saw them finish in fifth - with Franck Ribery missing a first half penalty.
L'OM's task was made more difficult by the 70th minute dismissal of Abdoulaye Meite, but they took the lead five minutes later through Toifilou Maoulida before Fernando Menegazzo equalised (88).
Completing the European qualifiers, Lens managed to finish in fourth spot on goal difference thanks to a 3-1 victory over Nantes that gave them Uefa Cup football.
Although Emerse Fae opened the scoring for the visitors after eight minutes, Lens showed their resolve with goals from Ferreyra Jussie (19), Aruna Dindane (21) and Adama Coulibaly (85).
Undoubtedly the most resounding result of the day came from Gerard Houllier's champions as Lyon finished the season with an acute display of their supremacy by destroying Le Mans 8-1 at Stade Gerland.
The visitors had the audacity to take an early lead through Grafitu (15), and Lyon punished them accordingly with Fred (20 & 40), Cris (28), Sylvain Wiltord (30) and Juninho Pernambucano (43) all scoring before half time.
Further strikes from Fred again (77) to claim a hat-trick, Sidney Govou (87) and Tiago (88) completed the rout as Lyon finished 15 points clear at the top of the table.
Auxerre managed to snatch sixth position thanks to a 4-0 win over Strasbourg with Thomas Kahlenberg (20), Luigi Peroni (43 pen, 47) and Lionel Mathis (85) scoring the goals.
Nice came in eight after a 2-1 win over Troyes, Marama Varihua (18) and Honorato Ederson (86) scoring either side of a Ziad Jaziri (67) strike.
Paris Saint Germain finished a further place behind, but ended the season with defeat as a late goal from Szabolcs Huszti (92) gave bottom side Metz a 1-0 win.
That result enabled Monaco to finish level with the capital club as they picked up a point in a 2-2 home draw with Nancy.
Gael Givet put through his own net after just eight minutes for ASM, but Ernesto Chevanton (63) and Francois Modesto (66) put them back in front before Andre Luiz (79) set the seal on an eventful stalemate.
Relegated Ajaccio ended the season with their eight win of the campaign thanks to a 3-1 victory over St Etienne.
Three goals in four minutes from Djamel Abdoun (22) and Mathieu Scarpelli (23 & 26) put Ajaccio in control, and St Etienne had Bafetimbi Gomis dismissed for two yellow cards before Julien Sable scored a consolation.
In the final game, Sochaux beat Toulouse 2-1, with Santos Weldon (79) and Melvut Erding (89) cancelling out Laurent Battles' early strike (7).
