Champions Lyon started the new Ligue 1 season with a 3-1 victory at Nantes.
French champions Lyon started the new Ligue 1 season by firing out a warning to any pretenders to their throne with a 3-1 victory at Nantes.
Sebastien Squillaci marked his debut for Lyon with a goal as Gerard Houllier's men recovered from the setback of conceding an early goal.
Nantes were ahead after just two minutes of the opening game of the season when Nourdin Boukhari fired home from 25 yards.
Less than 60 seconds later and Lyon were level when teenage striker Karim Benzema converted a John Carew cross.
Lyon forged ahead on 64 minutes when Squillaci headed in a Hatem Ben Arfa corner which had been helped on by Mahamadou Diarra and Claudio Cacapa.
The points were sealed two minutes from time when Fred took advantage of fine work from Kim Kallstrom to score.
The title holders are aiming for a sixth successive championship and the early signs could be ominous for the other 19 teams in the division.
