Lyon were made to wait for the Ligue 1 title as they were held to a goalless draw at home to Rennes.
Gerard Houllier's side needed victory to clinch an historic sixth successive title, but were frustrated as Rennes claimed their fourth clean sheet in a row.
The point takes Lyon 18 points clear of nearest challengers Toulouse with six games of the season remaining, and their goal difference is far superior.
It is expected to be only a matter of time before they are crowned champions, and it could happen on Saturday if Toulouse fail to beat Rennes.
If Toulouse do win, Lyon can still wrap things up this weekend by avoiding defeat against Auxerre on Sunday.
In the night's other game, Bordeaux jumped three places to fourth with a 3-0 victory over Nancy.
Marouane Chamakh opened the scoring after 18 minutes and added a second two minutes before half-time.
Fernando Cavenaghi (pictured) then completed the rout after 55 minutes to keep Bordeaux on course for European qualification.
