Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas would be devastated if Eric Abidal left the club in the summer.
With a sixth consecutive Ligue 1 title clinched over the weekend, Lyon's thoughts are starting to drift towards next season.
Abidal has hinted at a move to Spain at the end of the campaign, but Aulas is desperate to retain the France international.
"If he would leave, I would be really affected," Aulas told L'Equipe.
"He is one of the rare players that I would like to offer a contract for life.
"Is he hesitating so far? So I can't prevent a departure, above all if it is a big transfer."
Meanwhile, Aulas has responded to Lyon coach Gerard Houllier's plea for guarantees about his future.
He added: "Of course, I am very happy with that sixth title. It is the most beautiful and the most difficult. Each year it is more difficult.
"There is a strong tension, you know. Now it is up to me and Gerard Houllier to take things back under control and go forward for next season.
"My reaction about Houllier's words? I also have guarantees to ask of the players and the coaches. All that is quite logical.
"Gerard has been under pressure, he has been teased. He needs to feel supported again, but he also stated he has a chairman that always protects the coaches.
"I think there is no doubt about his future. He is under contract."
