Rennes have given up hope of signing Sylvain Wiltord from Lyon.Rennes have given up hope of signing former France international Sylvain Wiltord from Lyon.
The Stade de la Route-de-Lorient side have been chasing Wiltord for much of the summer but will now turn their attention elsewhere as their search for a striker continues.
Rennes appeared to be closing on a deal for the 33-year-old recently but a contract dispute between Lyon and Wiltord has held up the proposed switch.
Chairman Frederic de Saint-Sernin has now ended his interest in Wiltord as Rennes' desire to sign a striker before the season opener against Nancy at the weekend intensifies.
"I consider that it is over," he told L'Equipe. "We did our best, the case lasted for two months.
"The league resumes in one week and we want a forward before that date, because there are a lot of matches in August."
Udinese's Asamoah Gyan and Al-Saad's Marcio Emerson Passos are reported to be Rennes coach Pierre Dreossi's latest targets.
Meanwhile, Paris Saint Germain and Marseille are being linked with Wiltord, who is still expected to depart the Stade Gerland before the transfer window closes at the end of August.
