Ligue 1: Lyon playmaker Clement Grenier returns to training

Lyon playmaker Clement Grenier has returned to training after a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a groin injury.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder missed the latter weeks of last season with the injury and did not make France's World Cup squad because of a separate thigh complaint.

Grenier has been unavailable for Lyon so far this season after aggravating the groin injury in a Europa League qualifier in August but, after undergoing surgery in the summer, is now closing in on a return to action after a three-month absence.

The Lyon Academy graduate took part in training on Wednesday and was pleased to put his recent injury woes behind him.

"It's great to be back on the field and play some small games," Grenier told ligue1.com.

"I felt great out there today."

Grenier's return could not come at a better time for Lyon coach Hubert Fournier, who has had to make do without in-form midfielder Yoann Gourcuff in recent weeks.

Despite the pair's absence Lyon have made a bright start to the Ligue 1 season and currently sit third, two points behind leaders Marseille, after avoiding defeat in their last nine league matches.
