The game swung on the 15th minute decision to send off French keeper Ulrich Rame (pictured) by Scottish referee, Stuart Dougal.
Spanish striker Jon Perez Bolo burst into the box and was brought crashing to the ground by Rame, who was shown the red card.
From the resulting penalty, Luis Cembranos put the tie beyond doubt, beating Rame's replacement Frederic Roux with ease.
Just five minutes later and the home side was given a glimpse of ligjt when Sergio Ballesteros headed Christophe Dugarry's cross into his own net.
In what developed into a scrappy game, it seemed that the man advantage would eventually tell and so it proved when Bolo beat the offside trap and easily beat Roux to make the score 2-1.
Bordeaux tried their best to get back on level terms, but with a crushing 6-2 aggregate defeat, the second half was played out mainly for pride's sake for the French team.
