With Les Girondins expected to pocket around £5 million from Smertin's sale, Baup has drawn up a wish list of midfield anchor men to replace the Russian international.
Internazionale's Matias Almeyda is said to be one of the targets for the Parc Lescure boss but it is thought the club would prefer a season-long loan deal rather than a permanent transfer.
The Argentine international made 18 appearances for Hector Cuper's men last term but may seek a fresh challenge in Le Championnat.
The 29-year-old is joined on the list by Djurgarden's highly-rated Kim Kallstrom, who could be made available if a club can match the Swedish outfit's £3.5 million valuation.
In other news, Camel Meriem will join Marseille on loan subject to passing a medical on Monday.
The 23-year-old ex-Sochaux star was also being chased by Lens and Rennes but told L'Equipe the opportunity to join the Stade Velodrome side was too much to resist.
"I know it won't be easy, but you can't refuse Marseille," he said.
"It is a great club which wants to trust me, even after the difficult season I had last term.
"I must once again find my desire to play. You always want to play in the Champions League.
"I haven't talked about my role with the coach yet. Anyway I am happy. It is like I will start a new season.
"It became difficult playing at Bordeaux. Of course I am not happy with what I did there."
