Ulrich Rame has explained why he rejected the chance to join Espanyol on a three-year deal, as he still regrets a move to Arsenal collapsing some time ago.
The Bordeaux skipper is desperate to play in the UEFA Champions League and his decision was also dictated by family matters.
"I refused Espanyol for several reasons," Rame told L'Equipe.
"I always told myself I would leave without hesitation for a great European club, that competes for the national title or the Champions League.
"That is not the case with Espanyol, who have almost the same objectives as Les Girondins.
"If (it was) not (the case), I would leave with my eyes closed.
"My family is also an important aspect in my career. It is the basis of my success.
"It is essential, but it is not the only reason. Moreover, at Bordeaux, I know what I have.
"Honestly, I still believe in Les Girondins, even if I can feel a negative atmosphere around the club.
"There is that dilemma between the officials, the economical troubles, but also the anger and irritation from the fans."
The 31-year-old still regrets not linking up with Arsene Wenger a few seasons ago.
"Bordeaux were a little responsible for my non-departure to Arsenal," he complained.
"But that is in the past."
