Ricardo in Bordeaux title hope

Bordeaux coach Ricardo still believes his team can catch Lyon.

Bordeaux coach Ricardo has revealed that he still has aspirations of winning the Ligue One title.

The destination of the title had appeared to be a foregone conclusion when Lyon opened up a 14-point lead at the top towards the end of 2005, but Les Girondins have won five of their last six games, which, together with Lyon's comparative loss of form, has cut the gap to just seven points.

Brazilian Ricardo acknowledges that Bordeaux's fate lies largely in Lyon's hands, especially as they have played one more game than the league leaders, but he is aware that Lyon could become distracted by their UEFA Champions League adventures.

"Le Championnat is not over yet," he insisted.

"It will depend on Lyon, but it will be interesting because they are still in the UEFA Champions League.

"Every team usually goes through a difficult month, as we did in December.

"If we remain seven points behind it will be difficult, but possible. If the gap goes back to ten points then it will be much harder."

Ricardo also discussed why he has dropped young star Rio Mavuba to the bench in recent games, explaining that the change allows Bruno Cheyrou more freedom in midfield.

"I didn't play Mavuba for tactical reasons. That way I can get the best out of Bruno Cheyrou, who is more athletic," he commented.
