Juventus are beginning to drop away from the title challenge, with a couple of disappointing results leaving Roma and Internazionale clear at the top.
However it is the ignominious exit from European competition that has hit the club hardest, and new recruits are a certainty in the summer.
Van Buyten only joined Marseille in the summer, for a £13.5 million Belgian record from Standard Liege, but the man described as the new Jaap Stam is highly admired in Italy.
Lippi and Bettega were not the only high profile Italian figures at the game, with Lazio's Sergio Cragnotti also present - although it is suggested that he was there to watch l'OM's opponents Auxerre and star men Djibril Cisse and Phillipe Mexes.
The Lazio supremo may not have been impressed with what he saw, with Marseille emerging convincing 3-0 winners and putting a severe dent in the title hopes of their visitors.
