Daniel van Buyten fears Fabien Barthez's arrival as a Marseille player will jeopardise Vedran Runje's position at the club.
Barthez is waiting for the green light from Fifa to complete his loan switch to Stade Velodrome from Manchester United and has been training with his prospective team-mates.
The France international is due to compete with Runje for the right to be number one keeper under coach Alain Perrin.
Runje is happy to have Barthez as competition to be first choice on the South Coast but van Buyten is concerned for his colleague's future.
Van Buyten, who is admired by The Red Devils, is close friends with Runje and believes Barthez could usurp the Croatian in the pecking order.
"It is clear I am affected because Runje is my friend," van Buyten told L'Equipe.
"But I am a professional and I am concentrating on my football.
"However, Barthez's arrival is just competition and it is a matter for Vedran."
