Inter's miserable season has shown no sign of abating - and it took a major turn for the worse as they failed to break down their French visitors' determined rearguard.
Although the Nerazzurri had the lion's share of the chances, it was the visitors that finally broke the deadlock when Camel Meriem cantered all the way from his own half before calmly slotting past Francesco Toldo on 74 to all but seal the French side's passage.
Matias Almeyda had the best chance for Inter in the first half - but scooped woefully over after a good ball by Julio Cruz.
With the home fans growing increasingly frustrated by the lack of penetration. Cruz shot straight at Barthez when presented with a good chance, and Obafeme Martins lost his composure under pressure from the French goalkeeper.
After Meriem's goal, Inter pressed forward knowing that it would take a miracle - and three goals - to earn passage into the semi-finals but Kily Gonzalez wasted the best chance to give the fans a glimmer of hope.
Marseille put Liverpool out in the last round, and have now added another historic scalp to their impressive passage through to the last four of the competition.
