Los Merengues' need for a holding midfielder has been well-documented as they have failed to adequately replace Claude Makelele.
It was thought that their prime target for the position was PSV Eindhoven midfielder Mark van Bommel.
The Holland international will be out of contract at the end of the season, and it has been reported that Real have already secured first option on him.
Another candidate who was strongly linked earlier in the campaign was Argentine youngster Javier Mascherano, however, he now seems a more likely target for Real's Primera rivals Deportivo La Coruna and Barcelona.
Pedretti has emerged as a potential target, and the current crisis engulfing his club has only served to increase speculation about his future.
The French club saw boss Jose Anigo resign on Tuesday night having endured an indifferent start to the campaign.
It has been claimed that Real have monitored the France international for some time and were even considering a move for him before he joined Marseille from Sochaux last summer.
That deal cost é¼5.5 million, but Marca have indicated that Real have now been quoted a price of é¼8 million by Marseille should they firm up their interest in the 24-year-old.
Although Madrid supremo Florentino Perez had previously denied he would be making any signings during the January transfer window, it now seems almost certain he will look to address the frailities of the squad, and a move for Pedretti can not be ruled out.
