Former France international Sabri Lamouchi has announced his shock departure from Marseille.The classy 35-year-old has spent much of his time this season cutting a forlorn figure on the club's bench but his decision has nevertheless been greeted with real surprise in his homeland.
Marseille coach Albert Emon remains a firm admirer of Lamouchi's talents and has spoken of his surprise and regret at the player's decision.
"I am so surprised," conceded Emon. "I don't understand why Sabri took this decision.
"I have to accept it, but I am waiting for an explanation as to why."
Marseille chairman Pape Diouf has spoken of how the player approached him after Sunday's game against Bordeaux, to seek a cancellation of his existing contract.
"He wanted to meet me and Jose Anigo after the game to announce to us his intention to leave because of his situation," said Diouf.
