Ribery nearing return

Marseille winger Franck Ribery is closing in on a speedy return from his groin injury.

Marseille winger Franck Ribery is closing in on a speedy return from his groin injury.

Ribery has not played since mid-November and was advised to rest until the New Year.

However, he has recovered quicker than expected and looks set to resume training with the rest of the Marseille squad on Monday.

Ribery could therefore be fit to play in Marseille's final game before the winter break, against St Etienne on December 22.

Meanwhile, Renato Civelli has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Fabio Capello is a huge admirer of the defender and, according to reports in Spain, is mulling over a swoop for him in January.

Whether or not Marseille decide to let Civelli go could hinge on their efforts to sign Ricardo Costa on loan from Porto.

Sports director Jose Anigo met with the Portugal international during the World Cup but Marseille have yet to lodge an offer with Porto.
