Fabrice Fiorese scored the vital goal for the capital just after the hour, to move them within four points of Monaco.
Le Mans remain rooted to the foot of the table but were celebrating on Saturday evening after securing their first victory of the season.
Goals in either half by Laurent Peyrelade and Daniel Cousin secured what will surely be a confidence boosting victory for Le Mans.
Rennes and Lille played out an entertaining 2-2 draw.
Vladimir Mantchev scored both goals for Lille but strikes from Alexander Frei and Stephane N`Guema ensured the points were shared.
Rennes finished the game with nine men as Frederic Piquionne and Cyril Jeunechamp were dismissed.
Nice moved above Bastia in the Championnat table with a 2-0 win at Stade du Ray.
The home side have struggled to match their fantastic efforts of last term, but proved too strong for the Corsican side.
Christophe Meslin was the goalscoring hero for Nice, netting goals in each half to condemn Bastia to their fifth defeat of the season.
Meslin's first was a fine run and shot which went in off the post, while his killer second on 64 minutes came courtesy of good work from Lilian Laslandes.
