Le Mans are chasing Rennes' out-of-favour midfielder Philippe Delaye in a bid to boost their survival hopes.
The club currently occupy the third relegation spot in Le Championnat and are desperate for reinforcements during the transfer window.
Coach Thierry Goudet is hoping to persuade the Le Mans board to loosen the purse strings to fund his efforts to strengthen the squad.
Delaye has emerged as a chief target for Goudet, who feels the 28-year-old's experience will be a useful weapon in a relegation battle.
The former Montpellier man is out of contract at the end of the season and Rennes may be tempted to cash in now.
He has appeared just five times this term and Le Mans are preparing to hand Delaye the chance to resurrect his career.
