Trapattoni is expected to play with a lone front man next season and the pacey Switzerland international could be the ideal candidate - with Brazilian Cacao and Marco Streller to play off him.
Frei enjoyed an impressive campaign with Rennes, finishing as Ligue 1's top goalscorer but Stuttgart are set to face competition from clubs in Spain, Italy and fellow Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin to land the é¼8 million-rated forward.
