The 26-year-old Switzerland international star is contracted at the French outfit until 2007, but BVB bosses remain hopeful of luring him to the Westfalenstadion come the New Year.
"Frei would like to come," Dortmund president Reinhard Rauball told Kicker and added that sport director Michael Zorc will be negotiating with Rennes officials over a possible move.
The 1997 European champions have enjoyed a steady start to the Bundesliga season, but have lacked firepower after losing both Jan Koller and Cedric van der Gun with cruciate ligament injuries.
Should their move for Frei prove unsuccessful, former Werder Bremen and Schalke striker Ailton could be a further target.
The 32-year-old Brazilian has fallen out of favour at Turkish club Besiktas and could be ready to return to the Bundesliga.
"I am not prepared to discount any possibility as far as Ailton is concerned," Zorc said.
