Rapid Bucharest finished top of Group G despite a 2-1 defeat at Stuttgart.Rapid Bucharest finished top of Group G in the Uefa Cup despite a 2-1 defeat at Stuttgart, while PAOK Salonika handed out a 5-1 drubbing to lowly Rennes.
Rapid headed to Germany with both sides, along with Shakhtar Donetsk, already assured of qualification for the next round of the competition.
Mario Gomez struck twice for Stuttgart after 20 and 37 minutes to put Stuttgart 2-0 up and they would have jumped up from third to first in the table if the result had stayed the same.
However, a late goal from Lucian Burdujan ten minutes from time made sure that Rapid hung on to top spot in the group - which could be of great help when the draw for the next round is made.
PAOK Salonika and Rennes both had nothing to play for at the bottom of the group when they played in Greece, although it was pride at stake as neither side had a point to their name so far.
It was to be the French side who came away with the wooden spoon after Salonika inflicted a 5-1 humbling on the visitors.
Alain Rochat's own goal set the tone for things to come, while Lazaros Christodoulopoulos made it 2-0 seven minutes from the interval.
Rennes did reduce the deficit on 70 minutes through Jimmy Briand, but two goals from Yiasoumis Yiasoumi, either side of a Dimitrios Salpigidis penalty, ensured a healthy look on the scoreline for the Greeks.
