Olivier Sorlin believes Rennes are coming good at the right time and are capable of finishing second in Ligue 1.
Rennes made a stuttering start to the season but have shown signs of improvement since the winter break and are unbeaten in their last five games.
They remain eighth in the table but Sorlin feels the league is wide open - with the exception of runaway leaders Lyon - and has challenged his team-mates to snatch a European spot.
"Our season will be a good one only if we can grab something at the end," urged the midfielder.
"We have been knocked out of the two French cups by inferior clubs so the league is the only remaining thing to play for.
"It is up to us to stay focused until the end of the season because if we stay in the middle of the table, it is going to be boring."
Sorlin thinks Rennes have become a more defensive side since the likes of Olivier Monterrubio, Yohan Gourcuff and Alexander Frei left the club, and admits there has been a period of adjustment.
"Monterrubio was very important for the group. He was one of the major players as he was important in our system, a good passer and a goalscorer," Sorlin told Le Progres.
"We have lost a few strikers so we are starting to be a more defensive team.
"To my mind, we can be compared to Bordeaux, and we could do the same as they did last year.
"They didn't score a lot but finished second in the league."
