In three matches in the French top flight, there were four goals, with three coming from the penalty spot as Lille were held 1-1 at Metz.
With Lyon having drawn 1-1 at Monaco on Friday night, Lille were looking to make inroads into the reigning champions' advantage at the summit.
But they had to settle for the same result as the leaders after being pegged back by Metz.
Former Tottenham misfit Milenko Acimovic put Lille ahead after just eight minutes but Ludovic Obraniak's 50th minute spot kick gave Metz a point.
Lille then had Yohan Cabaye sent off for two yellow cards in the 89th minute before Metz's Franck Signorino befell the same fate in injury time.
Ibrahima Bakayoko's first half penalty gave Istres fresh hope of avoiding relegation as they gained an impressive win at home to Auxerre.
Sochaux's prospects of boosting their European aspirations suffered a jolt as Pascal Feindouno's 59th minute spot kick condemned them to defeat at St Etienne.
