Christophe Galtier will stay on as Saint-Etienne head coach after signing a two-year contract extension until 2018.

Galtier, 48, led Les Verts to fifth place in Ligue 1 last season as they qualified for Europe for the third year in a row.

He had been linked with the head coach role at Newcastle, but Saint-Etienne confirmed on Thursday that Galtier would sign a contract extension on his return from holiday.

"I am very happy to have concluded the agreement to prolong the adventure but I am also touched by the confidence shown in me by the board," said Galtier, whose existing deal was due to expire at the end of next season.

Galtier, who took over at Saint-Etienne in December 2009, has regularly been linked with a move to England, where he worked as the assistant to Alain Perrin at Portsmouth a decade ago.

He has helped Saint-Etienne finish in the top-five places in Ligue 1 for the past three seasons and is the club's third longest-serving coach, taking charge of 253 games.
