The veteran defender's current deal expires at the end of this season and a fresh contract has not been forthcoming.
Hierro is eager to resolve his future and wants a firm decision from the Real paymasters by January.
The Real captain has enjoyed an illustrious career at Santiago Bernabeu with five La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns under his belt.
But the 34-year-old wants to learn whether he will be offered a contract extension "as fast as possible."
The veteran stopper, who has scored over 100 goals for Real, is also mulling over a final season with his home-town club Malaga.
Real are reticent about handing Hierro a fresh deal as they are casting their net far and wide in search of a younger replacement.
Monaco's rugged Mexican stopper Rafael Marquez, and Argentinian duo Gabriel Milito and Walter Samuel have been mooted as successors to Hierro.
From his angle, Hierro is fully aware Real will be scouring the globe and accepts it is part and parcel of football.
He said: "I understand it because I am a professional footballer."
