The midfielder has gone from being a reserve last season to a virtual ever-present for Didier Deschamps's table-toppers this term.
His performances have led to comparisons with the likes of Edgar Davids and Sabri Lamouchi, and it would appear as if the 26-year-old is looking for an improvement in his standing at the club.
"I feel like someone who is now important to the team but I don't like to say so," explained Bernardi.
"I have found my place in the club after some problems in the beginning.
"Last year, I started on the bench and I did not have the confidence of my coach but, this season, the events are in my favour.
"I play all the time and, apparently, I have good statistics.
"My role is the same as that of players like Davids or Lamouchi, even if they have more experience than me.
"I would need to play for a better club than Monaco to be compared to them."
Bernardi's agent is set to meet Monaco officials in the near future in a bid to secure an improved contract.
The player's present deal runs until 2006, but Bernardi wants improved terms as his performances have had teams in Italy and Spain sitting up and taking note.
